Rome

24 July 2008

I am sitting in Da Nino, Rome – my favorite restaurant in the eternal city where twenty years ago I lived for three years making my ill fated Directorial debut ‘Priceless Beauty’. The only eternal thing about the film is my eternal embarrassment and the twenty years of debt it landed me in…

Rome – conditions are perfect. A warm breeze tickling the back – tourists mild to hideous – but otherwise the city breath taking as usual especially as the new Mayor forbids the hordes from sitting on the Spanish steps or eating in public. Hooray.

The Hotel Eden and the Royal Suite have not changed since my last visit three or four years ago. Smiling staff. Formal but charming.

Blog point today is pasta:

My New York medic, Doctor Kruger, advises me to cease and desist of wheat of any kind. He was right about bagels which left me bloated and combustible – pasta though is different. Well here it’s different and I will explain why.

It is:

a) Home made.
b) Piping hot.

Served simply and by a man who has been serving pasta for 30 years.

Why can British restaurants not serve their food steaming hot? Why don’t we have professional waiters?

Please email us your thoughts.
