Hat News
by Tom Stubbs21 April 2010

The ridiculous gnome style knitted hats that Jude Law, Brad Pitt and Russell Brand et al wear as a pseudo incognito look (hence adoption by chumps everywhere) are being replaced by the new comedic, woolly hat de jour. Operating in sort of East Berliner meets dock worker manner this ribbed number either evokes a Dexy’s Midnight Runners tribute look, Mike Nesmith from The Monkeys, or frequently and unfortunately, Kenneth from Citizen Smith (early eighties sit-com). I’ve spotted groups of young men in the East End with multiple versions deployed within their gang. This is all done with the most serious aplomb, upping the pillock quotient no end. They end up appearing like a peculiar prison-wing entertainment unit.

At FQR we’re far more inclined to recommend a sharp straw trilby than comedic knitted head gear. Let your banter and your anecdotes provide the laughs and your hat merely suggest a rakish attitude. On the right day with the right stance these fellas look doubly stylish. Wear them smart or casually, but do remember, best deploy them singularly not in groups to avoid people thinking the entertainment has just arrived.
