Everything is Under Control
Brent Pankhurst on maintaining your hair day to day, no matter what length or style.
Most men think they can just get a hair cut and then forget about their hair, but it doesn’t matter how long or short your hair is, you still have to work a little to maintain it. First off, you should be careful not to wash it too frequently. If you do, you wash out the natural nutrients and oils your body produces to keep it healthy. That said, people like to feel clean, and no one wants to have greasy, dirty hair, so just use a mild, good quality shampoo, and never more than a five pence piece unless you have really long hair. And in addition to using a little more shampoo, make sure to use conditioner at least once or twice a week if your hair is on the longer side. The longer you leave the conditioner in the better it works, so a leave-in is really best. If you have short hair, conditioner can’t hurt, but it isn’t really a necessity. There are basically three different strategies for dealing with hair of three different lengths: short, medium, and long. For short hair, you can easily keep it in check with a matt paste. This adds texture and control, but unlike a heavy wax it will wash out easily. Waxes block pores and create really bad build up, so steer clear.
You want even less defined control with medium hair, since it should really appear to have a natural flow. Just use a gel that adds some texture but keeps your hair soft and malleable. It should run through your hair easily and stay clean-looking all day. As you would think, long hair needs the least stiff product, but don’t think that it can totally look after itself. Use a leave-in conditioner the same way a person with short hair would use a paste and you will get a bit of hold without things getting gummed up. The worst is when a bad gel goes crispy or rock hard because you used too much. The conditioner is quick, easy, and will keep your hair healthy and looking good day after day
